Lower School Students Deliver Joy and Messages of Encouragement During Day of Giving

More than 160 students and teachers from The Oakridge School made the community around them a little brighter Monday, May 21. From decorating kindness rocks with inspirational messages to designing and painting banners for Arlington Fire and Police officers, the Lower School Owls contributed in a meaningful way to the LS Day of Giving.

Head of Lower School Sarah Schecter said there was a huge response to the Lower School's first Day of Giving last year. The North Texas Giving Day also proved to be a very big day in terms of teachers, students, and their parents giving of their resources and time to organizations and individuals in need.

"Our May 21st Day of Giving was a way for us to take things a step further," Dr. Schecter explained. "We are committed to providing our students with exceptional academic, arts, and athletics experiences. However, we're also passionate about developing considerate students who care about the community and world around them."

Among other Day of Giving projects, Lower School students and teachers assembled packets for the homeless that including socks, handwritten notes, bottled water and lip balm. 

Students also collected litter on campus; decorated lunch bags to deliver to Meals on Wheels recipients; decorated place mats for a local shelter; wrote letters of encouragement or gratitude for local officials; wrote letters for those serving in the Armed Forces; created dog toys that will be delivered to the local animal shelter; played games with residents at a local assisted living center, and much more.
