Oakridge is proud to announce that senior Cailey Cobb recently signed with Sweet Briar College to ride on their Hunt Seat Equestrian Team.

In addition to being an accomplished rider, Cailey is the spirited personality behind the Oakridge mascot, Big Al, and has been an integral part of the cheerleading team for four years. She has exhibited patience in teaching beginning riders the basics in safety and horsemanship, and served as a mentor and role model to her younger classmates. She is also an Oakridge Alpha and Omega, having started at The Oakridge School at age 3.

Although she’ll soon be a Sweet Briar Vixen, no one at Oakridge doubts that she’ll always be an Owl at heart. Best wishes to Cailey on her next great adventure!

The Oakridge Upper School A Cappella Choir recently returned from a trip to New York City where they performed with three other schools at Carnegie Hall, one of the most recognizable concert halls in the world.

In their downtime, the students attended Broadway musicals, visited Central Park, and took in the sights and sounds of New York City, all while being outstanding representatives of The Oakridge School.

Earlier in the month, the Upper and Middle School Choirs received accolades at the TPSMEA Concert and Sight Reading competition, held at Oakridge. Both choirs received straight superior ratings and the award of Sweepstakes, the highest rating any choir can receive. The Oakridge Orchestras also competed at TPSMEA at Bishop Lynch High School, receiving positive scores and recognition for their sight-reading skills. A job well done to all our Scholar Musicians!

The Oakridge School athletes made a great showing at the Spring SPC State Championships.

In Track, senior Breonica Coleman became only the 2nd two-time SPC track champion in Oakridge history. She won the 200 meter and also came in 4th in the 100 meter finals. Junior Trent Hall took first in the 100 meter and placed 2nd in the 200 meter. Sophomore Funmi Solano was the team’s third individual points winner with a 5th place finish in the 400 meter.

The Boys Tennis team also had a great weekend at SPC. They beat John Cooper in the first round but fell to Houston Christian in the quarterfinals. The team then rebounded, beating St. Mark's for the first time in school history. Sophomore Avery Pennywell and junior Jon Patel’s performances in their single’s matches helped the team to take 5th this year at SPC.

The Oakridge Softball and Baseball teams also played at SPC against tough competitors. Congratulations to all of our Owl athletes on a fantastic spring season.

On April 29, The Oakridge School Early Childhood Center students wrapped up a week of bike and riding-toy safety lessons by participating in the St. Jude Trike-A-Thon.

In addition to safety lessons, the children learned about helping others, including the patients of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, one of the world’s premier pediatric cancer research centers. Thanks to donations from the Oakridge community, this year’s Oakridge Trike-A-Thon raised more than $10,000—a large increase from last year’s total of $6,500.

“I am so proud of our children and families who have participated in the Trike-A-Thon this year,” said Betty Garton, Early Childhood Director and event coordinator. “Their support and dedication to this cause is overwhelming and I am most grateful.”

This is the 26th year that The Oakridge School has joined with thousands of preschools, daycares, and other groups across the country in sponsoring a St. Jude Trike-A-Thon event. It’s not too late to make a donation—for more information on how to contribute, contact Betty Garton at (817) 451-4994 x2716.

She won first place in the USA National Field Championship, as well as the TSAA State Indoor Championship. In July 2015, Shelby’s team won bronze at the European Youth Cup in Rome. One of Shelby’s proudest accomplishments is earning a spot on the USA Dream Team.

Shelby’s excellence does not stop with archery. She has been a four-year participant with our field hockey team, earning the Most Valuable Defensive Player award for three years, a member of the Chinese Club, and a talented artist. Shelby has performed over 100 hours of community service work through the Junior Optimist Club and her church. A film created by Oakridge freshman Rosalind Krabill was recently recognized at the Better Youth Real to Reel Youth Global Film Festival in California.

Rosalind's film “Little Girl” is about a girl being bullied because of mental illness. Rosalind made the film based on a poem she wrote and debuted it at the Oakridge talent show last year. The film was recognized at the Festival as one of the Best Biography selections, and Rosalind also received a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from Representative Karen Bass of California.

The 2016 Real to Reel Film Festival was held at the LA Film School and featured screenings of award-winning youth film selections and panels with industry experts. The competition honors youth who create original and unique media projects that address an issue plaguing their local or global community.

Rosalind, who lists her passions as acting and photography, says she might make another film this school year, again based on a poem she has written. Her award-winning film “Little Girl” can be viewed online.
