Recently, The Oakridge School raised more than $8,600 for the victims of Hurricane Harvey. The donation was delivered to the American Red Cross on behalf of the Oakridge community: students, parents, and staff.

As the flooding overwhelmed Houston and other parts of the state, Head of School Jon Kellam put a call out to the Oakridge community to try to raise $5,000, which is approximately $5 per student and staff member. The response was great, leading to a final total of $8,632.31. Every penny was tallied, as students emptied piggy banks with a desire to help those in need.

Thank you to everyone who supported this school-wide effort. Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to those recovering from the impacts of Hurricane Harvey.

Meet the Oakridge Key Club

Founded in 1925, Key Club International has spread to many schools across the country, and into the lives of many high school students. This international society allows students to create vast networks of service and collaboration. The Oakridge School's chapter of Key Club was created in 2016, and has grown dramatically in its second year of service. Membership has increased from 50 to 89 members, making the Key Club the largest and most diverse student organization on campus.

The club gives students opportunities to log service hours that are necessary for graduation, create new friends, and make an impact in the Arlington community. In fact, the Oakridge Key Club has logged almost 400 hours of service within the past 90 days.

Each month, the executive members strive to plan events that have an impact within their school as well as in the community. For the month of October, Key Club members have the option to volunteer at Owlfest, participate in one of several car washes benefitting hurricane victims, or raise money for UNICEF's Eliminate Project. In taking home UNICEF's trick or treat boxes, members can ask their neighbors to donate money toward eliminating childhood tetanus.

Even though this is only the second year of service for the Oakridge Key Club, we are extremely proud of all they have accomplished, and can't wait to see what the future holds for this outstanding group of Owls.
