With the correct spelling of the word “astonishment,” fifth grade student Collin Scarborough became the winner of The Oakridge School’s Middle School Spelling Bee.

Collin correctly spelled the word in front of attentive and excited students, teachers, and parents who packed the Fine Arts Performance Hall on Friday, Jan. 18. In all, 19 middle schoolers entered the school level of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Collin advances to the regional competition.

The Oakridge Spelling Bee lasted nearly two hours, making it the longest Spelling Bee in school history. In the final rounds, Collin went head-to-head with two other of the school’s top spellers: seventh grade student Joy Lewis and eighth grade student Eshan Singhal. Eshan won a spell-off and will serve as the school’s alternate.

Bee Week 2019 takes place May 26-31. The Scripps National Spelling Bee takes place at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. Visit http://spellingbee.com/ for more information.
